Promenade fluviale du Grand Montréal
2024
The main objective of this project is to consolidate and enhance the recreational infrastructure along the St. Lawrence Seaway dike. Targeted and thoughtful interventions will strengthen people’s connection with nature and the river, while honoring the historic role and heritage of the Seaway.
Access to the shoreline is a central theme: the development of rest areas, lookouts, access docks, and pathways—linked by a continuous, landscaped shoreline punctuated with distinctive features—will shape the backdrop of this ambitious project.
The genius loci
The site’s history, unique geomorphology, breathtaking views, and hydraulic constraints are among the defining elements that shape its identity. The project seeks to reveal the site’s personality and highlight the singular character of this landscape.
A guiding thread: a unified signature
The ambition to unify the entire study area relies on the creation of a coherent signature. The choice of designs, materials, and layouts establishes a shared language. The shoreline trail and cycling path thus become the guiding threads that link together the different sectors and focal points.
To reinforce this coherence, a modular system—comprising benches, seating, ground surfaces, and structural elements—was developed. It allows for a variety of configurations (lookouts, rest areas, docks, landmarks) while maintaining a consistent aesthetic throughout the promenade.
The notion of critical mass
Given the vastness of the site, careful thought has been given to the density and distribution of amenities to create lively, welcoming spaces. A meticulous approach to the scale of interventions has generated a range of atmospheres adapted to different uses: relaxation, contemplation, movement, and discovery.
