Belvédère de la Chute-Montmorency — Experience Chute
2026
An iconic landmark of the Quebec region, Montmorency Falls holds a special place in the collective imagination. At the foot of the falls, a promontory has for decades offered visitors a unique vantage point and experience. A legacy of the modernist movement, the concrete structure—whose original designers remain unknown—has established itself as an essential part of the visitor experience at the park.
Over time, the original structure revealed its limitations: poor levelling leading to the accumulation of water and sediment, difficult access, conflicting foot traffic, a lack of handrails, and safety issues exacerbated by the dead-end nature of the path; as a result, the site was unpopular and deserted by visitors.
The renewal project was driven by a clear intention: to rehabilitate a piece of modern heritage and extend its relevance by addressing functional shortcomings whilst preserving the essence of the site. Today, its renewed popularity perfectly illustrates the success of the architectural project, which fosters this special connection between the visitor and the site’s exceptional geological richness; between the visitor and the waterfall.
The boldness of simplicity
The redevelopment of the Montmorency Falls viewpoint features a design that is both understated and masterful. It seeks neither spectacular effect nor formal showmanship. Instead, it is based on a series of precise, thoughtful and sensitive interventions that enhance the structure’s safety, accessibility and durability, whilst showing deep respect for the landscape and the site’s geological heritage.
In a context where architecture is called upon to play a central role in the socio-ecological transition, this project offers an exemplary model: doing better with less, extending the life of existing infrastructure, working with the site’s strengths rather than against them, and placing the human experience at the heart of decision-making. Sustainable architecture rooted in its local context — where quality is measured by the precision of the design and the power of the landscape it enhances.
